Unlock Account

How to Unlock an Account With Admin (t1fmlnn) Account

  1. Launch Active Directory Users and Computers with administrative privileges.
  2. To do this, click Start > Administrative Tools > hover over “Active Directory Users and Computers” (ADUC). If the “Administrative Tools” option is not in the start menu, it can also be found in the Control Panel.
  3. While holding the SHIFT key, right click on the ADUC object and a new option will appear in the menu list. “Run as different user.” Click this option.
  4. A prompt will appear to enter credentials. Enter administrative credentials in this window. This will launch ADUC as the admin user.
  5. The ADUC snap-in will launch after clicking OK.
  6. Click the search icon to find a user, as seen below.
  7. The search utility will open, giving many search options.
  8. Be sure the “Find” drop down menu reads “Users, Contacts, and Groups” and the “In” drop down menu reads “ad.louisville.edu.”
  9. Type all, or part of the userID that needs to be found in the “Name” field. Leave the “Description” field blank, and click “Find Now”
  10. The UserID will appear in the “Search Results” window. Be sure to only identify the UserIDs and not a Contact Name. A contact name will appear in the search results window as a first name, a middle initial, and a last name. This will not be used to unlock the account
  11. Right click on the UserID that is currently locked. Select “Properties” from the menu.
  12. The properties for the selected user will appear. Click the “Account” tab in the properties window.13. Check the “Unlock Account” check box. If the account is actually locked, it will say so here. The example below does not reflect an actual locked account. Click Apply, and OK to unlock the account.
